Vitamin D may help patients who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) get more from their pulmonary rehabilitation, according to a study conducted by researchers from Belgium.
The results of the study will be presented at the ATS 2011 International Conference in Denver.

"Our study shows that high doses of vitamin supplements (d) at the head of the rehabilitation program to improve the record results in terms of exercise capacity and respiratory muscle strength," said Miek Hornikx,
physiotherapist and doctoral student in the Department of the respiratory tract in Leuven Catholic Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium.
Lack of vitamin D is common among patients who suffer from this disease, and is often associated with a lack of exposure to sunlight and diet.
She explained Ms. Hornikx COPD patients also often have limited physical activity as a result of breathing difficulties associated with the disease, which may also result in less exposure to sunlight.
"This can be considered a disease of the respiratory and related consequences is an important respiratory tract, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, blood vessels and muscle weakness," she said.
"These results will eventually be adversely affected as a result of lack of physical activity, which, along with exercise intolerance, which is a common feature among patients who suffer from this disease, and proved to be related to mortality.
