At the end of the study, the researchers found that patients who were treated with vitamin D had a significant improvement in exercise capacity and respiratory muscle strength compared with those in the second group.
"These results support the idea that correcting vitamin D deficiency by adding vitamin D to training programs allows COPD patients to achieve better results from rehabilitation, including improved muscle strength and exercise capacity," said Ms. Hornikx.

Interestingly, despite the significant improvement in exercise capacity in patients treated with vitamin D, these patients did not report a significant increase in health-related quality of life.

"This can be attributed to the fact that we had a relatively small number of patients included in this study, as well as for a relatively short study," said Ms. Hornikx. She added that future studies should focus on the specific mechanisms of vitamin D, which affects patients who suffer from this disease.
